From the moment you clap eyes on a Scottish Terrier with that varminty expression and see the heads up/tails up attitude, you just know that this breed is a little power pack. Not affectionately nicknamed “Old Diehard” for nothing, this determined little fellow was bred to hunt badgers and foxes and has been adored and owned by many famous people just for his loyal and faithful nature. The Scottish Terrier shows great spirit and should exhibit that he has the wherewithal for the job in his rugged appearance combined with power.

His coat is one that is a close lying double coat with wiry, harsh, outer coat. Put together well, trimmed and blended into the furnishings for a distinctive Scottie silhouette, Judges find the Scottie is an arresting Terrier and very hard to go past without pulling a lot of attention to him. That high intelligence is also a great attraction as he learns well and is smart enough to remember!

This is a traditional hard coated terrier where correct grooming and preparation is of extreme importance.

Shampooing a Scottish Terrier requires a specific terrier shampoo that will not soften or open the coat.  For this use Plush Puppy Texture + Shampoo. This is formulated to retain and improve coat texture. This shampoo thoroughly yet gently cleanses and deodorises the coat of Terriers and other wire, harsh or coarse coated breeds without softening or compromising texture. It’s ideal for boosting body and coarseness in coats of all colours and coat types. Formulated to be pH controlled, it can create or maintain texture, is low irritant with a subtle apple fragrance and is easy to rinse out. It is full of beneficial and powerful extracts from the Gentian Root, Juniper Fruit, St John’s Wart Leaf, Hay Flower, Lemon Balm Leaf and Arnica Flower that combine to nourish and vitalise the skin. Use diluted up to 1:10 (1 part shampoo to 5 parts water) or apply undiluted directly to areas requiring intensive cleansing. Rinse thoroughly.

For those with Black Scottish Terrier’s that want to keep that luscious black depth in the colour, use Plush Puppy Black Opal Shampoo. Dilute 1:1 (1 part shampoo to 1 part water) and leave on for approximately 10 minutes and then rinse. Repeat as needed to maintain depth of colour.

This is a black coloured shampoo for toning black coats, giving depth to faded coats and enhancing natural colour.  It is not a dye but a strong stain that contains organic sources with herbal extracts and intense black tone.

For coats requiring a toning quality to neutralize warm or red tones use Plush Puppy Herbal Whitening Shampoo diluted at 1:5. This will not lighten or bleach but instead tone with optical brighteners. This is the same for darker colours as it reduces any warm tones hence intensifying the depth of colour.

For Brindles and Wheaten’s, use the Plush Puppy Herbal Whitening Shampoo at the same dilution rate of 1:5.

This is a ‘do not use conditioner’ breed.  Instead, use oil on the coats at this point for moisture and protection to the hair. Use Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil to add shine, hydrate and condition to the coat.  It is a truly beneficial blend of using extracts of Calendula oil, Wheat germ oil, and Evening Primrose.

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons (depending on the coat) to 2 Litres of water, then either sponge on or sluice well through the coat and LEAVE IN. DO NOT RINSE. This is quite a unique product in that it is not greasy and totally water-soluble. It gives an outstanding healthy vigour to the skin and coat.  It will maintain the texture and moisture in the coat and help protect from the elements. Use the oil at this dilution rate after shampooing for a show. Again leave in and do not rinse. You will get a nice healthy sheen on the coat with this routine.

Now, blow dry using your Plush Puppy Ultimate Pin Brush so as not to overstretch the hair until it is at least 3/4 dry and then switch to the Plush Puppy Ultimate Anti-Static Porcupine Brush which is 1/2 dialon pin and 1/2 bristle enabling you to smooth the coat. Aim the air of the dryer to follow the growth of the hair and not against the growth. For the legs and hocks use the Plush Puppy Ultimate Slicker Brush. All brushes are exclusive to Plush Puppy using the finest of materials and ergonomically designed.

Finish with a Plush Puppy Professional Grooming Comb. These are built for absolute ergonomic comfort in various sizes. The lightweight oval shaped spine combining fine and coarse pins made of hardened stainless steel with anodic oxide finish that reduces drag and static to the coat. Perfect for use for this breed of dog.

At times due to various reasons including the weather static electricity can create flyaways. If this occurs use Plush Puppy Anti-Static Coat Control. This lightweight spray is infused with organic extracts of Witch Hazel Leaf, Linden Flower, Birch Bark and Nettle. It also adds to the protection, include a UV filter to stop sun damage and protect against heat strength for the perfect finished look of the coat. This amazing product is idea for this breed and a must for your tack box.

When brushing a Scottish Terrier during the week or at shows use Plush Puppy OMG. This is a revolutionary grooming spray that lives up to its name. A light spray of OMG and brushing in allows this product to refresh the coat leaving it feeling wonderful.  It separates the coat and leaves the most amazing finish. Use the concentrate form at 1:30 (1 part OMG to 30 parts water). At this rate it provides excellent hydration when brushing yet does nor overly soften. Brushing a dry coat only causes friction and stress to the coat.

Using OMG can be a one-off at shows or during the drying process after bathing. This is also an amazing product for regular brushing as it hydrates the coat reducing stress and coat loss. Its active ingredients smooth the cuticle and protect the coat.  OMG never builds up and never goes stringy. A product that took years to develop using amazing technology for maximum effects. A true necessity for the tool kit.

Still requiring me texture then, add a few light sprays of Plush Puppy Ruffy Tuffy Coat Spray. Spray as many times as you wish until the required texture is achieved. This is not a sticky spray but a “scratchy” feel spray to get that level of harshness so desired.

Ruffy Tuffy will create texture and settle a fluffy, soft or freshly bathed coat and is designed specifically for harsh and short coated breeds where a harsh wire texture is essential. It effectively firms and coarsens the coat by separating and individualising the hairs of the coat, for that unwashed, wired, texturised terrier look. Ruffy Tuffy Coat Spray will not leave the coat sticky.

To increase texture and aid in hand stripping and carding, use Plush Puppy Powder Puff Terrier. This remarkable powder uses a scientific blend of powders that add texture and also deodorise a Scottish Terrier coat. This remarkable loose chalk adds that harshness needed.  It is a naturally sourced formula and perfect for this purpose. Just a light sprinkle and pat in.  The white chalk disappears without a trace leaving a crisp coat.

For those needing an aerosol spray use Plush Puppy HOLD. This is a strong sculpting spray scientifically formulated for shaping all types of coats on Show Dogs. The quick drying formulation won’t become sticky and will not build-up. HOLD can be removed with ease by simply shampooing the coat. Contains Pro Vitamin B5 to improve elasticity, moisture retention and flexibility in their coat hair. We recommend using and storing at normal room temperature for a perfect mist spray. Optimum spray distance is approximately 30cm (12 inches).

The reason the Plush Puppy has more than one way to add texture is we understand that individual dogs need at times different products to achieve desired results.

To groom that brilliant Scottie head, use Plush Puppy Sit N Stay for the shaping you need. Use a small amount rubbed into the hands, apply down the sides of the face and eye brows to give you the look. Shape those eyebrows to perfection and this will hold them into place. Sit n Stay is a pliable coat shaper for shaping small areas and keeping styles in place.

The silhouette shape of the Scottie is of great importance but not one I can attempt to begin to teach through words on paper. The art of stripping with hand/knife is something that much be watched and learned. Some are superb at this and it is a treat to see their skill. It does nonetheless takes time to do even when mastered and there are no short cuts to achieving the lofty heights of a true Scottie presenter.

For between shows maintenance, add Plush Puppy Reviva Coat to the furnishings and to the edges and underbelly of the coat for protection. This is a great between show moisturiser to use without overly softening the coat. It is the perfect product for after show bathing out of the furnishings, to protect and moisturize.

On Show Day I also like a spray of Plush Puppy Odour Muncher for a nice clean smelling dog. It literally deodorises and gives a pleasant fragrance to the dog negating most odours with ease.

This is one of the unmistakable terrier breeds, defined by its classic and distinctive Scottish Terrier silhouette. A breed if shown to its rich history makes a strong contender in any line up of dogs.
