Some annual events we grow up with become so iconic that they spring to mind weeks in advance. We get that rush of excitement at the mere thought of their imminent approach.
The Royal Queensland Show, affectionately known as the ‘Ekka’, is right up there with all those other important occasions on the calendar. It’s close to the hearts of many, attracting around 400,000 visitors annually.

It’s a Dog’s Life
The 2024 Ekka runs for nine days, from August 10 to 18. The Brisbane Showgrounds will again play host to 10,000 animals and 21,000 competition entries.
You’ll have the chance to experience world-class entertainment, fabulous carnival rides, gourmet food, fine wines and plenty of show bags, including Plush Puppy’s must-have sack of show dog pet products.
Full of tradition, the Brisbane Ekka has been running since 1876. Here are a few of the highlights from shows past:
- 1877: the first ride appears— a state-of-the-art merry-go-round
- 1920: Edward Prince of Wales visits
- 1926: Queensland Country Women’s Association make its first appearance
- 1950: Fairy floss, butterboard sandwiches, & Strawberry Sundaes appear
- 1954: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip attend
- 2019: Alexandria Park completed for dog competitions
Highlights of the Show Dogs at the Brisbane Ekka Competition Schedule
Organisers expect over 2,000 entries in categories such as “Working Dogs,” “Toys” and “Terriers.” The perfect pooches will show off their skills in Rally, Dances with Dogs, Agility and Jumping.
