This prestigious event comes under the Sydney Royal Easter Show umbrella, an iconic event attracting over 800,000 people every year.
Of all the Australian dog shows, this is one of the biggest contests top breeders talk about most. When it comes to Australian dog competitions, this one is right up there.
Read on for the lowdown on all the highlights, including the dog agility challenges and the top prize for Best in Show.
Dates For Your Diary: March 22nd-April 2nd
Entries for the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show close on February 7th. The actual event kicks off on March 22nd with the Obedience Trials, including Rally. The last day is April 2nd, when Breed Stall Day, the Oodles on Show and the Dog Grooming Show take place.
More than 1,000 dogs will compete across a wide range of events over 12 days. The attractions include the Baby Puppy Competition and the Canine Hero Awards.
The action takes place at the Sydney Showground, a purpose-built venue located at Sydney Olympic Park. Opened in 1998, it was a venue for the 2000 Summer Olympics, replacing the former Sydney Showground at Moore Park.
A Little Piece of History
The very first canine contests took place back in 1869 at the Agricultural Society Show. Breeds included Pointers, Beagles, Greyhounds and Bloodhounds. In 1901, there was even a category for dog biscuits, but the most sought-after ‘Best in Show’ trophy didn’t get introduced until 1931.
Today, more than 150 years later, the dog judging lawns are places to celebrate everything we cherish about dogs. What’s become the most prestigious canine competition in Australia now sets tails wagging across the globe.
